A message to Harvard's international students and scholars

April 18, 2025

On April 17, the Harvard International Office (HIO) and the Office of the Vice Provost for International Affairs shared the following communication to the University's international community:

Dear Harvard International Students and Scholars,

As many of you may be aware, the University recently received a letter from the Department of Homeland Security, initiating a review of Harvard’s compliance with Student and Exchange Visitor Program requirements. As we evaluate the request, we will comply with the laws of the United States and uphold the University’s policies.

Harvard deeply values the contributions of you, our international students and scholars, who come from around the world to teach, learn, and engage in transformative research on our campus.  We see the talent, passion and dedication you bring to your work every day, with benefits not only for Harvard but also for the United States and the world.

The Harvard International Office (HIO) is here to support international students and scholars—both as you prepare to enter the United States and while you are here for your academic pursuits.  We have received a number of inquiries asking about international travel and expressing an understandable heightened level of concern. HIO Advisors are available to help you evaluate individual circumstances, and we strongly encourage you to contact us if you are considering travel outside the country or to discuss other questions.  In some cases, that conversation may result in a referral to the Harvard Representation Initiative for a consultation.

Also, earlier this week we launched a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) resource on the HIO website to address common concerns.  Additionally, we will host an online "Know Your Rights" information session on April 22 at 4:00 p.m.  All interested Harvard affiliates are invited to register in advance and participate.

Thank you for everything you contribute to Harvard.  We will continue to share updates as they are available.  We remain dedicated to supporting you and advocating for your ability to thrive here.

Sincerely,
Harvard International Office & the Office of the Vice Provost for International Affairs
